Alleged cattle smugglers attacked Bajrang Dal activists at the Jabalpur Naka area in Damoh, Madhya Pradesh, on 20 February when they tried to recover the container in which they suspected cows were being smuggled. Three activists of the Hindu organisation were injured in the attack.

Fellow activists of Bajrang Dal held a demonstration outside the local police station, protesting against the assault. Under pressure, the police registered a case against 25 suspects and began a search operation to locate them while investigating the incident.

Bajrang Dal workers were tipped off about cattle being smuggled out of the New Damoh Colony in a container. When they reached the spot, a group of about two dozen Muslims reached there too and assaulted three members of the Hindu group allegedly with sticks and sharp weapons.

The injured activists of Bajrang Dal were rushed to the hospital.

Bajrang Dal not alone

Other Hindu organisations active in the area got the news as hundreds of people gathered in front of the Jabalpur Naka police post and raised slogans, accusing the police of being tardy in action. Some activists blocked the road.

Senior police officers intervened and tried to pacify the demonstrators who would settle for nothing less than strict action against the attackers. The commotion took hours to subside.

Additional SP of Damoh informed the press about the registration of a case based on complaints by the injured against 20 to 25 unknown assailants. He said he was monitoring the case closely.

The suspects are absconding even as separate police are on their trail. The cops recovered the container in which the cattle were being transported. Hindu organisations allege that the suspects have been accused of cow slaughter and other illegal activities in the past.
