Randeep Hooda ‘being Hindu’ as Swatantrya Veer Savarkar nears release

'I didn’t know so much about Vinayak Damodar Savarkar when I was approached for this,' actor Randeep Hooda said at the release of a trailer of the film

On 4 March, a trailer of the upcoming Randeep Hooda starrer Swatantrya Veer Savarkar was released. Directed by the actor, who also portrays the title role, the film promises to be more than a mere biopic. While it has been fashionable in Bollywood to be on the right side of the Narendra Modi dispensation, which is purportedly Hindu, the ‘hero’ of this film has hardly been on the other side. He is underscoring his social credentials once again, as the film on one of the greatest freedom fighters India has known is all set to release.

The official note of the film states that it will be a grand and audacious retelling of India’s armed revolution for independence.

The trailer, filled with captivating visuals and powerful dialogues, commences with Randeep Hooda as Veer Savarkar walking in the ‘Kaala Paani’ prison in the Andamans. With a commanding voiceover, he sets the tone by stating,

हम सबने पढ़ा है कि भारत को आज़ादी अहिंसा से मिली है लेकिन ये वो कहानी नहीं है

“We have all read that India attained freedom through non-violence, but this is not that story.”

The trailer encapsulates the journey and hardships of the freedom fighter Swatantrya Veer Savarkar in his quest for India’s independence.

The trailer additionally presents the significant occasion when the two influential figures, Mahatma Gandhi and Veer Savarkar, crossed paths, emphasizing the contrast in their beliefs and methods regarding India’s fight for independence. The trailer emphasizes the film’s focus on the armed revolution in India, providing glimpses of its leaders and martyrs like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Madanlal Dhingra, Bhagat Singh, and Netaji Subhas Chandra. It delves into the political landscape of that era, which contributes to the film’s high anticipation. It seems that the film holds the promise of reshaping modern Indian history.

“I didn’t know so much about Vinayak Damodar Savarkar when I was approached for this,” said Randeep Hooda. He continued:

When I read up about him in great detail, I was astounded by his life and his influence on other freedom fighters of that time. ‘Why do we, as a nation, don’t know much about him?’ The thought infuriated me so much that I took it upon myself to tell his story to the world as it is. This film is a tribute to his undying spirit and unwavering commitment to the nation and about the contribution of armed revolution in India’s fight for Independence which he influenced so much. We will break many myths surrounding Veer Savarkar and honour his legacy with an honest, no-holds-barred portrayal.

Randeep Hooda producer too

The release of the film has Anand Pandit, the producer who played a crucial role in its creation, filled with excitement. Pandit expresses his deep admiration for Veer Savarkar and his impactful life. He believes that Savarkar’s vision of India as an idealist and his immense contribution to the freedom struggle should serve as inspiration to the youth. This movie is Pandit’s way of honoring Savarkar and presenting it as a gift to the young generation.

Sandeep Singh, another producer of the film, acknowledges Vinayak Damodar Savarkar as a true patriot who has been misunderstood by many. He believes that Savarkar’s rebellious actions against the British led people to label him as a terrorist. Singh urges those with misconceptions to watch the film, as it will provide them with factual information and help dispel their false beliefs. He hopes that the film sheds new light on Savarkar’s legacy. Singh feels privileged and grateful for the opportunity to make a film about one of the greatest freedom fighters of his time.

Scheduled for a worldwide release on 22 March, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar is a production of Zee Studios, Anand Pandit, Sandeep Singh, Randeep Hooda and Yogesh Rahar. Roopa Pandit, Sam Khan, Anwar Ali and Panchali Chakraborty are its co-producers. Starring Randeep Hooda, Ankita Lokhande, and Amit Sial, the film has Hindi and Marathi versions.

A Hindu in his personal life as well

Randeep Hooda and Lin Laishram exchanged vows on 29 November 2023 in a sacred union. The couple celebrated their love with a traditional Hindu Meitei ceremony in Imphal, the capital of Manipur that was witnessing hostilities between the Hindu-majority locals and Kukis, a Christian-majority community that immigrated from Myanmar.

Prior to their marriage, Randeep and Lin visited a temple in Imphal, seeking blessings for their new journey together. A friend of theirs captured the moments of their pre-wedding festivities, showcasing the radiant couple and their wedding party.

In addition to the temple visit in Imphal, the couple also sought blessings at a temple in Heingang, located in the Imphal East district. Lin shared photos from this visit on social media, expressing their gratitude. Inside the temple, Randeep performed sacred rituals while dressed in a well-tailored kurta, while Lin adorned herself in a beautiful pink saree, adding to the significance of the occasion.

Later, a video of their wedding day went viral on social media. Randeep looked elegant in a white kurta-pyjama, while Lin mesmerized in a blue netted saree. The couple’s choice to embrace the traditional Hindu way of marriage garnered admiration from pro-Hindu social media handles and profiles, who expressed their delight over this union.

The wedding remained an intimate affair though, attended by close friends and family.

Randeep and Lin Laishram had kept their relationship private. They published a joint statement on Instagram confirming their wedding date some days ago. The statement read,

Taking a leaf out of Mahabharata where Arjuna married Manipuri Warrior Princess Chitrangada, We are getting married with the blessings from our families and friends. We are filled with immense joy to share that our marriage will take place on the 29th of November 2023, Imphal, Manipur followed by a reception in Mumbai. As we set to embark on this journey, we seek your blessings and love for this union of cultures, for which we are forever indebted and grateful. IN LOVE AND LIGHT, LIN & RANDEEP.
