Curious ‘ghar wapsi’ where weaver becomes Brahmin

While Ansaris are weavers in India and ‘Ansar’ is Arabic for ‘warrior’, the ‘ghar wapsi’ brigade did a yajnopavita sanskara to turn Salim into Vedvrat Shukla

At a reconversion event organised at Kailash Dham Ashram in Jhunsi, Prayagraj, a Muslim man renounced Islam yesterday (12 February) and embraced Hinduism, curiously adopting a surname of Brahmins. The 25-year-old Salim Ansari alias Bablu, a son of Wajid Ali and hailing from the Ghurpur police station area shared details of his Muslim family with the media after his ‘ghar wapsi‘, saying his father had died 10 years ago and that his sister Roshan Jahan was married.

Ansari said that he was not married yet and he lived with his aged mother in a rented room in Mayurabad, supporting the family by driving an auto-rickshaw.

After his ‘ghar wapsi’, the man with his newfound faith said he bore in his heart a great fondness for Hinduism since childhood. He said he worshipped Shiva even while living miserably in a rented house.

Salim-Ansari-turned-Vedvrat-Shukla told reporters that his mother never objected to his ‘Hindu’ practices.

Salim said that on 31 January, he was driving his auto-rickshaw when he found a poster announcing the event of reconversion to be held at Kailash Dham Ashram in Jhunsi. He planned to accept the sanatana dharma* at the event.

On 6 February, Salim visited the ashram and talked to its management. The mahant of the ashram, Swami Krishnananda, asked him to embrace Hinduism for ‘purification’. Salim readily walked into the arena of the ongoing 201 Kundiya Yajna in Kailash Dham Ashram for the promised ‘purification’.

While Ansaris in India are weavers while “Ansar” is the Arabic word for a warrior, the organisers of the event conducted a yajnopavita sanskara with Vedic mantras to turn the man into a Brahmin! After the completion of the strange rites, Salim Ansari was named Vedvrat Shukla.

The organisers exhorted ‘Shukla’ to follow the path shown by his guru.

This news report uses terms such as “reconversion” and “ghar wapsi” from the perspective of organisations and outfits conducting such events with the belief that all Indian Muslims and Christians were Hindus generations ago and that their ancestors had been forced to accept Islam by ‘the might of the sword’ or inducements. Before the demolition of the Babri structure in Ayodhya, however, many Muslims, somehow carrying a notion that Indian ancestry was inferior, used to claim they had descended from Arabs, Turks, Iranians, Mongols and Afghans.

* Sanatana dharma, which sounds like a noun qualified by an adjective, implies “eternal faith”. Hindu activists coined the term a few decades ago, preferring its use to referring the belief system as “Hinduism”, as many opined that the etymology of “Hindu” pointed to foreign origins. They said further that an ‘ism’ sounded dogmatic, a prefix that “Christianity” and “Islam” did not carry on purpose.
